BIOPOLYMERS: i) Development of a sustainable process for obtaining bacterial nanocellulose (BnC) using an alternative medium to produce bacterial nanocellulose (patent), and procedures for in situ/ex situ modification of BnC; ii) Development of flame-retardant and UV-blocking membranes from cellulose nanofibrils and lignosulfonate-rich biowaste for a wide range of technical applications where recyclability and cost-effectiveness are essential; and iii) Development of biopolymer membranes based on chitosan and (modified) nanocellulose or graphene oxide for direct use in ethanol fuel cells.
Development of electrospun cellulose acetate nanofibrous composites with incorporated zeolites for the removal of volatile organic compounds from air.
Development, and pilot and industrial scale testing of printed micro/nano fibrillated cellulose (without/with dispersed functional additives such as Al2O3 nanoparticles or SWCNTs) for improved moisture management, mechanical properties and wear resistance, to promote its reuse and recycling.
